What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?

Did you guys hear about this drama? Yes? Everyone? Oh. I'm the only one late to the party? I guess so, because from what I've seen online, a lot of people watched this, a good proportion dropped it, and I 100% understand why.

Regardless, now I watched it too, and I have some... thoughts. The elipsis is not because I have something bad to say about it, not necessarily, only that I'm not sure that's the best way to describe it. The drama did not leave a strong impression on me.

Right, before I go further, there may be spoilers, so read with caution.

It took me a long while to finish watching What's Wrong with Secretary Kim? because, and how do I say this, the story is predictable. As soon as I got the first crumbs about what may have happened before Mi-so and Young-joon met as adults, everything was pretty much crystal clear. Looking back on my notes, by episode 3/16, I already got most of the plot, and had already started feeling meh towards the drama and just the mountain of cliché after cliché, but decided to keep on watching because it was kind of fun.

The drama served very well as a fun, not at all heavy, little watch after a long day.

Mi-so was pretty much constant throughout the drama, she was nice, hard-working, and an overall great person to have around, but I was pleasantly surprised with Young-joon's character development. At first I didn't like him very much, and I didn't expect my opinion to change, but the more I watched the drama, the more I saw him actually try his best and actually doing something to become the right guy for Mi-so instead of doubling-down on his 'aura'.

I wouldn't go as far as to say I did a 180 by the end of the drama, but yeah, I did like him more in the later episodes. I did especially like him in the boyfriend role, he was pretty cool.

And speaking of, I overeall liked Mi-so and Young-joon's dating. They did plenty of fun stuff together, acting silly, having dissagreements and solving them quickly (fk yeah communication!). Just them figuring out how to be a couple instead of vice-president and secretary was great, that bit made the drama for me.

Where I felt I was robbed a tiny bit was when everyone finally found out about them dating. I was looking forward to the hilariousness of it, but it felt anticlimactic. Sure, it was funny that everyone had already figured it out, but it was not hilarious

Onto something more controversial, when it comes to the other characters, I absolutely despised Gwi-nam. At first I thought he might make a fun pair with Ji-ah, but the guy got on my nerves quickly and often. I skipped parts of the episodes he was in, I couldn't stand him. I get him for wanting everyone to have a good opinion on him, and once he explained his upbringing I understood it even better, but I still can't find it in me to like him. Young-joon's brother is right next to Gwi-nam.

Se-ra was midly annoying too, I guess she was there for comedic relief most of the time, and I wish they would have done something better with her character. There are options, and she definitely could have had a more meaningful role.

Yoo-shik on the other hand, was great! He was funny, although bit scared of Young-joon as a boss, and I so would have liked for him to get more screen time, go absolutely bonkers, and not keep being stuck on the past (although that turned out well for him).

To wrap this up (major spoiler here), I didn't care much about the whole kidnapping plot. It felt like a filler, something thrown it for the, gasp, drama. The whole meeting when they were children bit also felt weird, unrealistic, and a slightly disturbing thing to lead to romance. Is it just me?

I also didn't enjoy Mi-so not quitting her job. What was the point then? Just for them to end up together, but with extra steps? Okay, fine, her quitting what the catalyst of their relationship, but there was no reason for her to not quit afterall. Uff.

My rating for What's Wrong with Secretary Kim? has to be ★★☆☆☆
